Front matter

  • Structured abstract of up to 250 words with headings, able to stand alone. Avoid references.
  • One to seven keywords.
  • Highlights are required: 3 to 5 bullet points of up to 85 characters each, including spaces, uploaded as a separate file.
  • A graphical abstract is encouraged (at least 531 × 1328 pixels, height × width).

Formatting

  • Editable source files only: Word (single column) or LaTeX. A PDF is not accepted as the source file.
  • Numbered sections and subsections (1, 1.1, 1.1.1), with the abstract left unnumbered.
  • Acknowledgements in a separate section directly before the references.
  • Author contributions using CRediT roles.
  • Competing interests via Elsevier's declarations tool, and a funding statement even if there was no specific funding.

References

  • Numbered in square brackets in order of appearance, for example [3,6].
  • Journal names abbreviated according to the ISSN List of Title Word Abbreviations.
  • Preprints must be marked as such, with DOI; if a peer-reviewed version exists, cite that instead.

Data and reporting

  • Research data must be deposited in a repository and cited, or the manuscript must explain why it cannot be shared.
  • Animal studies should follow ARRIVE guidelines; the sex of animals must be reported.
  • Sex and gender should be addressed following the SAGER guidelines, or noted as a limitation.

Using AI tools

AI use in preparing the manuscript must be declared in a dedicated section before the references, naming the tool and the purpose. Basic grammar, spelling and reference tools are exempt. AI must not be used to create or alter images of primary research data, such as blots or micrographs.

Review and fees

Single-anonymized review, usually by at least two reviewers. Proof corrections are due within two days. The journal is open access; see the open access options page for the current fee.
