Scope in one sentence

Endocrinology is the Endocrine Society's basic science journal: molecular, cellular, genomic, organismal and translational or preclinical work on endocrine and metabolic function. Clinical studies are not considered here and belong in JCEM or the Journal of the Endocrine Society instead.

Presubmission inquiries need a title, an abstract of up to 250 words and a short statement of importance of up to 250 words.

Title and abstract

  • Title: 120 characters including spaces at most. Questions, wordplay and joke titles are discouraged.
  • Abstract: under 250 words, covering purpose, methods, results and main findings. No citations, and written for a general audience.
  • Keywords: two to six, optional.

What each section should do

  • Introduction: place the work in its historical context and explain its intent and significance.
  • Materials and Methods: enough detail for others to repeat the work, including resource deposits.
  • Results: present the data briefly, in text, tables or figures.
  • Discussion: interpret the findings and relate them concisely and objectively to other work in the field.
  • Data Availability: a labeled section just before the references, using one of the journal's standard statements.

Formatting for first submission

  • Format-neutral submission is allowed: one Word, RTF or PDF file. Metadata extraction only works with Word files.
  • Continuous line numbering is mandatory. Manuscripts without it are returned.
  • Double-spaced, single column, 1-inch margins, all pages numbered.
  • Tables and figures go after the references.
  • No cover letter is needed; special requests go into a text field during submission.
  • The submitting author needs an ORCID, and all authors need an institutional or employer-assigned email address.

References

  • AMA style, numbered consecutively in parentheses, listing all authors at first submission.
  • Unpublished work, personal communications, submitted manuscripts and preprints do not go in the reference list.
  • Supplemental data cannot be uploaded as files for publication. It must be deposited in a repository and cited as a reference.

Figures, tables and reporting

  • Every figure needs alt text, placed directly under its legend and starting with "Alt text:".
  • Tables cannot contain color or graphics.
  • Images are screened for manipulation; no feature may be enhanced, moved or removed.
  • RRIDs are required for antibodies and ELISA kits. Cell lines must be authenticated.
  • Report the sex of subjects and animals, and whether sex was a factor in the analysis.
  • Give exact P values, effect sizes and confidence intervals.

Using AI tools

AI use must be disclosed during submission and also described in the Methods or Acknowledgments. Authors remain fully responsible for the work regardless of AI use.

Fees

  • No page charges for Endocrine Society members and members of partner societies in the Global Endocrine Leadership Coalition.
  • Non-members pay $119 per PDF page.
  • No color charges. Open access is optional, for an additional fee.

Revisions

Authors have two months to revise. A revision needs two Word files: one showing all changes marked, and one clean copy with identical content.
